Ana & Jakob Rutar
Our grandparents built the first of these houses in 1964, close enough to the water to hear it with the windows shut. Three more followed, and we have spent the years since restoring them slowly and letting them ourselves.
We are a family rather than a management company. Between the four houses there are twenty-two beds, one very old dog, and a woodpile that gets restacked every October whether it needs it or not.

The Soča really is that colour.
It comes off the snowfields of Triglav and does not warm up much on the way down — eight degrees in August, and clear enough to count the stones. Rafting and kayaking from April, the gorges and the Walk of Peace all year, Kanin turning from December. Every house is within twenty minutes of the water, and two of them within four.
